Bio: Catrina Calavera was born as the middle child of Maria and Jose Calavera. Fernando is the eldest brother while the youngest and most horrific abomination of a sister was Lola. The Calavera family in Ventana Del Alma, a floating city in the Xana region on the Brilliant Blue River, had been the oldest and richest families in Ventana Del Alma. The family’s rise to wealth started back about three thousand years ago during a conflict between an Elven country of Claradonnis and Xana when the family founder organized the battle of Ventanna Del Alma. From there, the Calavera family would grow in both power and wealth, especially in the cleaning product industry as well as the hella sketchy mafia business. Now, the mafia business was an unspoken knowledge in the area, it was fairly balanced too before Maria married in from the noble family, Muertes. Moment the marriage was finalized, Maria ordered a hit on the current family head, her father inlaw and took over the mafia business with cold ease. Because Jose never had a spine along with having relied solely on his father’s wealth, Maria had a very easy time keeping Jose in line with cold hard cash and some play things every so often. Ventana Del Alma was in a vice-like grip from the Calaveras, anyone that went out of line either had their finances strangled or disappeared mysteriously all together. You can imagine how well that horrifying power dynamic affected Catrina and her siblings.
Fernando was originally supposed to be the heir to the Calavera family head, taking on the wealth and business, however, Fernando would end up being an absolute disappointment in Maria’s eyes due to his ‘quirks’. This along with other factors (such as resemblance and operatic talent), Catrina was strongly favored by Maria as the replacement heir. From a young age, Catrina had been trained as an opera singer due to her natural vocal talents and her ability, Sound Defect. Catrina’s childhood wasn’t all work though, not by any short means, she ended up having a very strong bond with her older brother, Fernando and often went with him to Lupe’s growing up. Lupe, the tavern owner in town, had been very much the parent Catrina needed in her life and still views Lupe as her parent to this day. This shielded Catrina from most of the awful going ons at home for a good chunk of time, until Catrina turned fourteen. At that point, Maria had given her third child, Lola, an absolutely green child that mortified the mafia head to no end. It was during one of these bouts of Maria’s madness when the incident happened. Catrina has no clue what happened or what argument led to it, but that night, her brother, Fernando, lost a chunk of his antenna after getting into a fight with Maria and ran away from Ventana Del Alma.
For the next five years, since Fernando was no longer there, Maria moved Catrina in the position of taking over the family business and wealth, thus commencing the demanding regiments that came with it. Catrina would often slip away at night to go to Lupe’s when she had the chance and slowly started making plans of escape with them. It didn’t help matters much either with Lola’s disturbing disposition becoming more obvious as time went on and Catrina was growing fearful of the youngest. Finally, on her eighteenth birthday, Catrina executed her escape plan on the night of her opera performance. Catrina had been practicing a spell of sorts, a sleep spell if one had to be specific that put the audience, her monster mother included, to sleep. With that, Catrina ran off to Lupe’s and managed to get help with catching a ship out of Xana. For the next eleven years, Catrina survived on being a traveling bard of sorts, often changing troupes due to incidents like driving a band of bandits into madness after changing their heart beats into screams of the damned through sound defect. Of all that travel, one goal was still in Catrina’s mind, finding Fernando and reuniting with him. On her last year of traveling by foot, Catrina ended up joining the crew of the Pry Gala as entertainment given that Scal, the ship’s first mate, took a liking to Cat’s absolute gremlin child energy. From there, Cat started to kinda mellow out (not a lot, she still terrorized her crewmates with her shenanigans like Koda, Koda was not thrilled with that one :( ). Back home, Maria started making plans to bring Catrina back home as Jose..Jose abused his special ability to the point his genetic structure was unstable and was actively dying. It was the prime time to get Catrina home to take over the family name along with an arranged marriage. Fliers were distributed throughout all sea ports of Catrina’s image on them with a reward for her safe return home. Rightfully, Catrina freaked out, to the point she did something that’ll haunt her dreams. Scal, having run into Maria years ago during a botched robbery, ended up showing Catrina how he managed to avoid being found by the horrifying mafia matriarch for so long.
Taking Catrina below deck, Scal showed her the worst magic item ever made, a little black gemstone of sorts that he wrapped Catrina’s Totem with before having her perform a little ritual with him. Catrina learned that day two things, that black gemstone likes to cause pain, lots and lots of pain along with rapidly aging Scal further into an old man. Turns out, Scal had used this stone before and it rapidly aged him into being an older middle aged guy to avoid being found by Maria the first time. Good news though for Catrina, her Totem can turn her fully human complete with warm blood and a guilty conscious of what she did to Scal :D This plan lasted for a bit until they reached Bearrest. Bearrest sure was a thing with Maria, Jose, and Jose’s horrific goon, Creepy Eddy suddenly being there. This turned into a full blown horror show battle of sorts what with Jose’s body finally breaking down into a putrid goo of sorts during the fight, Creepy Eddy doing unforgivable things to orphans via fusing them with aquatic life, and ultimately, Creepy Eddy dying horribly due to heavily mutating himself into a mishmash of things…Creepy Eddy didn’t think that one through. Catrina could breathe for now, the only threats now was mother dearest being still alive along with the possibility of Maria sending in the family monster, Lola. Not long after this incident the miraculous happened, Catrina found her brother Fernando! Bad news, he had pissed off an entire ship of skeletons after hitting on the Captain’s younger brother. So Catrina and her crewmates had to fight off a skeleton ship to save Fernando from being rotted to the bone (no seriously, one of the skeletons had a rot sword of awfulness.)
After that battle, the crew was unharmed and Fernando was very, VERY lucky to be alive as well as not being an undead skeleton goon. With a tearful reunion, the crew carried on with Fernando on board, proving that he was indeed, far more of a horrible gremlin than she was (He stole an entire thing of chocolate chip muffins in one go, stuffing them in his cheeks like a chipmunk.) When the voyage ended (Specifically after making a wish that Maria would turn into a slug and Lola into a pillar of salt, thus killing them both at the same time), Catrina returned home with Fernando to live with Lupe. Things were peaceful for the whole year with Maria, Jose, and Lola gone finally to the point Lupe could hire another coworker, Bones. However, good things never last and all too soon, during the holiday of De Las Ojo Mas Brilliantes, hell broke loose in Ventana Del Alma. Vampires and mutated abominations were released upon the general public, it was pure pandemonium with many lives lost during it. Catrina as well as her found family had to fight their way out of Ventana Del Alma with the help of Scal and Throk. Good news though, Scal managed to reverse the rapidly age state he was in and is now young again due to it. They managed to escape the ensuing chaos and moved right into Estella Del Rio, a huge floating city that’s major for magic users. Currently, Catrina is enjoying her college life learning to be a necromancer, though, something just doesn’t seem right with Lupe…what could ever be wrong with Lupe?
